Creamy Strawberry Orange Smoothie
Yield: 1 - 2 Servings Time: 15 Minutes
Sweet strawberry and bright citrus flavors combine perfectly in this refreshing breakfast drink, while banana and avocado lend a satisfyingly smooth and creamy texture.
Ingredients
2 cups of fresh or frozen strawberries – about 14 medium strawberries
1 orange
1/2 medium banana
2 tablespoons almonds, whole or slivered
¼ avocado
1 cup coconut almond or almond milk
1 teaspoon honey
Preparation
Rinse and hull strawberries if using fresh strawberries. Cut off both ends of the orange to create a flat surface - be sure to cut enough so that you can see the inside of the orange. Lay the orange on a flat side and slice along the curve of the orange to remove all of the peel and white pith. Cut the orange into segments. (You can search for How to peel and slice oranges for video instructions). Peel and halve the banana. Cut almonds in half if using whole almonds. Cut avocado in half, and scoop out the flesh from one-quarter.
Place the ingredients into a blender, along with the almond milk and honey. Process until smooth.
Pour into serving glasses, and squeeze the juice from the orange ends into the glasses for an extra pop of orange flavor.
Why Kathleen Recommends This Recipe
“Strawberries, oranges, and almonds are all bursting with compounds that fight inflammation and help protect the heart.
This smoothie gets its staying power from healthy fats. Avocados are one of the few fruits that contain healthy unsaturated fats that help lower undesirable LDL cholesterol. And almonds are another great source of unsaturated fat, with very little of the saturated fat that can contribute to clogged arteries.”
